After a burn injury, the scars can be quite distressing and can take some time to settle into a stable appearance. Techniques such as scar moisturisation and massage and the use of topical silicone and pressure garments (custom-made, elasticated garments for wearing over the scarred area), can help in the early stages after the burn has healed. They help to soften and flatten the scarred area.
Once the scar is mature (has reached a stable appearance and has been fully healed for at least 12 months), the final appearance can be evaluated. At this stage, it may be possible to improve the appearance of the scar with scar revision techniques. For example it may be possible to reduce the size or to release a tight scar. Unfortunately, it is rarely possible to completely eliminate a scar following a burn severe enough to leave permanent scarring.
