As we age, the skin around our eyelids becomes looser and can cause folds in the upper and lower eyelids. The fat around the eye, which normally cushions the eye can also start to protrude. This can lead to a “tired” look or “bags” around the eye.
Upper blepharoplasty or upper eyelid lift surgery is an excellent procedure to rejuvenate the upper eye area. By removing the excess skin, the eye appears brighter, more alert and less tired. It has a very good anti-ageing effect too!
Upper blepharoplasty surgery removes the excess skin and sometimes protruding fat from the upper eyelid leading to a fresher, more rejuvenated appearance. The surgery can be carried out under local or general anaesthetic and is often a day case procedure. It may also be done in conjunction with other facial rejuvenation surgery such as lower blepharoplasty (lower eyelid lift surgery), facelifts or browlifts.
An incision is made in the natural crease of the upper eyelids. Excess skin and sometimes a small strip of muscle are removed. If fat is protruding, this too is removed or repositioned if possible. Nowadays it is preferable not to remove too much or any fat if possible, rather to reposition the fat. Depending on the extent of surgery required, it is sometimes possible to do an eyebrow hitch through the same incision.
Enough skin has to be left behind to ensure that you can still close your eye properly afterwards. There will be some swelling and bruising which will mostly settle in the first one to two weeks post surgery, but will take longer to fully disappear. Only excess upper eyelid skin is removed during this procedure. If you have excess skin on your lower eyelids, this will not be removed with an upper blepharoplasty and would require an additional procedure such as a lower blepharoplasty. You may be advised to have a brow lift as well as or instead of an upper blepharoplasty if you have brow ptosis or a drop in your eyebrow position as this will help gain the best result for you.
Overall upper blepharoplasty surgery is an excellent procedure with a very high satisfaction rating following surgery.
